Nothing is worse after a really hard break-up than turning on the radio and having to suffer through another sappy, sad love song like "Say Something", "When I Was Your Man", or most recently added to the heartbreak list: "Stay with Me". So don't do it. Save yourself a few extra tears and turn the radio off. Instead change your Pandora station to Cyndi Lauper Radio and go out and have some fun.
I've been through my share of upsetting break-ups and what helped me get out of my self-loathing slump after the last one was a playlist I created and played on repeat entitled "Super Awesome Playlist". I only allowed myself to listen to a few select songs because anything else risked reminding me of him and the waterworks would start all over again. So I thought I might share my top 10 from this playlist and hopefully they will help any newly single ladies out there remember how freakin' awesome they REALLY are.
10. Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri You need to allow yourself to get a little angry right now and be a tad bit melodramatic. This is the song for that. Perfect for singing in the shower and when you're really alone-- lyrical dance.
9. Irreplaceable - Beyonce
It's time to move all those lonely feelings to the box to the left. I love this song after a break-up because it reminds you there is not only someone out there to replace him, but someone even better. It also helps you feel a little more fierce like the Queen B herself.
8. Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield
Tomorrow is a new day and the sun will still be shining. This song is a happy little reminder that there's always a chance to start fresh. Make your future a little brighter.
7. Bulletproof - La Roux
This is a good beat to get ready for a night out with. It's upbeat and the repetitive message might be exactly what you need to hear. Don't go back to him, he's not worth it.
6. Any Man of Mine - Shania Twain
This country jam will remind you to keep your expectations and standards high during what seems like the never ending journey to find Mr. Right. He's out there, don't settle.
5. I Look So Good (Without You) - Jessie James
The title says it all. You're one sexy mama and you don't need any man to tell you that. He'll be missing you in no time when he sees just how hot, confident, and beautiful you are without him.
4. Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae
Sometimes, well, a lot of the time after a break up you find yourself just feeling kind of down. This is my go-to happy song to calm my spirits and relax. Pour yourself a drink, find yourself on Pinterest, and let this song take you away.
3. Dollhouse - Priscilla Renea
Allow yourself to go back to the preteen years and enjoy this over the top girl power song. The message may not speak to everyone but if you have been with an extremely controlling partner as I have, it is worth the listen.
2. Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye
Chances are you know this song by heart because it's completely played out. But that's OK. That's what you need right now. Drive around town blasting this and lip sync the entire song like you are singing it directly to his stupid face. By the time you get to your desination, you'll feel better for sure.
1. Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
Take it back to the 80s with the ultimate girl power song of all time. Get together with some other single ladies, primp up, head out and make this the theme song of the night. Because girls, they just wanna have fun.
If you have any other song suggestions or think I completely missed some great songs, leave them in the comments so we can all help each other out. 'Cause let's face it... break ups suck.
